Captain
Cook Monument, Kealakekua Bay
On Janurary 17, 1779 during a local religious
festival, Captain James Cook and his ships, the Resolution
and Discovery entered Kealakekua Bay. The Hawaiians welcomed
him, thinking he was a returning god. Once the Hawaiians realized
Cook and his crew were not immortal, Cook was surrounded and
killed at this very spot. The Captain Cook Monument is only
approachable by foot trail or by water.
